A weld neck flange is a circular fitting that has a projecting rim around the perimeter. These flanges are usually machined from forging and butt welded to a pipe. The rim is equipped with a set of drilled holes that allow the flange to be bolted to another flange. It is quite expensive because of its long neck. These are commonly picked in high-stress applications, as its neck sends the incoming pressure from its neck to the thickness of the wall at the weld which gives the necessary support and reinforcement for the flange. They have long tapering necks, making them different from others. At the flange joint, metal is thicker at the tapered neck, which gradually narrows down to converge with the pipe, at the point where it is butt welded to the pipe. Hence the stress transfers from flanges to the pipe, leading to a reduction of stress concentration and increased stability of the connection. Carbon Steel A105 Welding Neck Flanges are suitable for high-pressure situations and a wide range of temperatures. These types of flanges are able to withstand pipe expansion and contraction caused by fluctuations in temperature. Due to stress transferred to the pipe, these flanges can withstand pressure. When connected to a pipe, the beveled end creates a trough, if forms a robust weld. The fitting of these welded neck flanges, however, necessitates more advanced welding skills. The internal weld must be smooth to reduce friction, while the exterior weld must meet code standards.
