In lower-pressure configurations, ASME B16.5 Slip On Flange is more frequently used when a higher-stress service calls for a superior attachment to the piping system. This is because a slide-on style flange can accommodate a pipe with a fillet weld connection, but a weld neck flange has a strengthened hub at the base to allow a weld bevel connection to be made directly to the pipe’s butt weld end.
